The hardest part of approaching a new skill is the beginning, where it feels like no progress is being made. This is incredibly demotivating, especially if you haven’t yet made a habit of working on it, and many attempts fizzle out at this point.

However, one interesting mindset to fight this is to think of your bank of strengths and weaknesses in this skill. There will always be strengths and weaknesses forever, but you can at least start growing the good side. So pick the easiest possible aspect of this skill, and learn that.

As soon as you can do one thing well, you have a skill to fall back on. Start reaching out into more difficult topics, but if you lose motivation you can always come back and produce good output in the skills you’ve banked so far.
